St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.
The Quality Assurance Framework of the institution has been developed to assure academic standards and enhance the quality of education. It underlines the institution’s commitment to excellence and improvement.

Dr Vijayakumar Moleyar, Vice-Principal and Head of the Kannada Department at St Philomena Autonomous College, passionately emphasized that the Kannada language has profoundly nurtured people, instilling values of civilization, culture, and wisdom. Speaking at the Kannada Rajyotsava celebration organized collaboratively at the PG Seminar Hall, by the Kannada Department, Kannada Sangha, and Yaksha Kala Kendra, Dr Moleyar remarked, “Our ancestors’ efforts in fostering unity should not go in vain. Kannada is a language that binds life, reality, and emotions together, serving as an ideal in our lives. Let it continue to flourish.”
Presiding over the event, Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro highlighted the importance of understanding and adopting the true essence behind such celebrations, noting, “Language is an inseparable part of culture, and Kannada should become an integral part of our lives. The rise and development of our language reflect our progress.”
Following the lecture, the students of Yaksha Kala Kendra presented a soul-stirring Kannada Bhava Gayana as a tribute to the language and culture. The event was graced by Dr Norbert Mascarenhas, Registrar (Evaluation)of the college, along with faculty members and students who participated in the celebrations.
Students Manasa, Surabhi, and Tanvi led the prayer. Mr Prashanth Rai, Director of Yaksha Kala Kendra welcomed. Mrs Prashanti N, Asst Professor Department of Kannada proposed a vote of thanks. Dr Maitri Bhat Asst Professor Department of Kannada compered the event.
