St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

In a momentous event organized by the Department of Physics (UG and PG), the students and faculty members of St Philomena College Puttur gathered to witness the live launch of the Aditya L1 mission on September 2, 2023 at Spandana Seminar Hall. The event featured Dr A P Radhakrishna and Prof. Ganesh Bhat, Vice Principals of the College along with Dr K Chandrashekhar, Department of Physics, Convener of the programme.
Prof. Ganesh Bhat, the guest of honour, delivered an inspiring message, emphasizing the importance of cultivating a deep interest in understanding the universe. He urged the young students to actively engage in the pursuit of pure science and to utilize the knowledge gained from space projects for the betterment of mankind.
Dr A P Radhakrishna, the resource person of the program, shared his fascination with astrophysics and highlighted the capabilities of the students at St Philomena College. He delivered an enlightening talk on the Aditya L1 mission, explaining its processes and workings in detail.
The event commenced with a prayer led by the students of II BSc. Vineeth Lobo, a student of III BSc, extended a warm welcome. The event concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Poojashree V Rai, Department of Physics. The gathering consisted of enthusiastic students and dedicated faculty members from the BSc program, all eager to witness the unfolding of this significant space mission.
