St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

In a heartfelt tribute to the iconic hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, the Department of Physical Education at St Philomena College observed National Sports Day with great reverence on 29 August 2023. The event, which took place at the SJM Hall of the college, served as a poignant remembrance of Major Dhyan Chand’s remarkable contributions to the world of sports.
The Department orchestrated a meaningful celebration to mark the occasion lauding the accomplishments of athletes representing India in the Commonwealth Life Saving Championship thus aiming to ignite motivation among students. Among the honored were Trishul Gowda, Swikrith Anand, Neel Mascareness, and Dhanvith, who will proudly represent India in the forthcoming Commonwealth Life Saving Championship in Canada. Noteworthy coaches, including Mr Paartha Varanasi for swimming, Mr Mohammed Habeeb for Kabaddi, and Mr Pushparaj for weight lifting, were also recognized for their contribution in the success story of St Philomena College in the arena of sports which is now a history.
Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of the college highlighted the significance of the occasion, lauding the accomplishments of athletes representing India and emphasized the values of discipline, punctuality, and teamwork that sports instil. The honouring of achievers holds a special place as it fuels inspiration among students. Renowned as one of India’s hockey legends, Major Dhyan Chand continues to serve as a role model for today’s youth, he said further.
Parents of the achievers graced the occasion thus adding value to the celebration.
The event commenced with an invocation of blessings by Ms Praapti, followed by a warm welcome by Dr AP Radha Krishna, Vice Principal. Mr Elias Pinto, the Physical Education Director, announced the names of the honoured students. Mrs Bharathi S. Rai, the Head of the English Department and PRO, extended a vote of thanks. The program was compered Mr Prashant Rai Asst Professor of BBA Department. Dr Malini K, Dr Norbert Mascarenhas and Mr Rajesh Moolya Physical Director were graciously present on the occasion.
