St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.
The Quality Assurance Framework of the institution has been developed to assure academic standards and enhance the quality of education. It underlines the institution’s commitment to excellence and improvement.

The Department of History of St.Philomena College started functioning in 1958, the very year of the inception of the college. Mr. K. Narayan Bhat (1958-59) was the founder faculty of the department. He was succeeded by K. Shankar Bhat who served in the department from 1959-1962.
Mr. Puttanna Gowda joined the college as a faculty of the department of History in 1962 and continued till 1992, the year of his superannuation. Mr. N. Krishnamurthy joined the department in 1965 & served till his superannuation in 1995. Between 1985 -87 Ms. Durga Laxmi rendered her services as a part time lecturer. Besides, Ms. Rajani served as a lecturer in academic year 1993 -1994 and left the college for better prospects.
The history department aims to make the students aware of the past and its legacies through teaching, research and extension activities in Indian History in the context of World History.
