St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.

Department of History

The Department of History of St.Philomena College started functioning in 1958, the very year of the inception of the college. Mr. K. Narayan Bhat (1958-59) was the founder faculty of the department. He was succeeded by K. Shankar Bhat who served in the department from   1959-1962.

Mr. Puttanna Gowda joined the college as a faculty of the department of History in 1962 and continued till 1992, the year of his superannuation.  Mr. N. Krishnamurthy joined the department in 1965 & served till his superannuation in 1995.  Between 1985 -87 Ms. Durga Laxmi rendered her services as a part time lecturer. Besides, Ms. Rajani served as a lecturer in academic year 1993 -1994 and left the college for better prospects.

Vision:

The history department aims to make the students aware of the past and its legacies through teaching, research and extension activities in Indian History in the context of World History.

Mission:

  • Transform the students into citizens who are critically informed about the past and its consequences for the present. 

  • Promote studies in History, Society and culture of India in general and Karnataka in particular.

Objectives:

  • To impact extensive knowledge in social science subjects.

  • To empower the students with language skill.

  • To prepare the students with enriched oral and written communication

  • To train them in logical inquiry, healthy discourse and scientific analysis.

  • To provide students with a range of key and transferable skills, integrated into the subject material, including team-working, communication and problem solving.

  • To help imbibe social, moral, ethical values in order to promote good citizenship.

  • To promote the use of technology in education and real life situations.

  • To demonstrate skills for life-long learning.

  • To equip the students with knowledge, skills and attitude to become more suitable for the present and emerging employment market.
