St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, commemorated the birth centenary of noted academician Prof. G.T. Narayana Rao with a meaningful programme organized by the UG and PG Departments of Physics at the SJM Hall.
The event aimed to enlighten students about the life and remarkable contributions of Prof. G.T. Narayana Rao, particularly his efforts to popularize scientific knowledge among the general public through his writings in Kannada.
The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Harinarayana Madavu, Retired Professor of Kannada, St Philomena College, Puttur. In his inaugural address, he congratulated the organisers for conducting such an insightful programme and emphasized the importance of disseminating scientific knowledge in regional languages.
The function was presided over by Rev. Dr. Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur. In his presidential remarks, he highlighted the multifaceted achievements of Prof. G.T. Narayana Rao, noting his contributions as a Mathematics Professor in the field of astrophysics and other domains. He encouraged students to emulate his intellectual curiosity, develop interdisciplinary interests, and cultivate innovative thinking.
The chief guests, Dr. A.P. Radhakrishna, Adjunct Professor, PG Department of Physics, and Prof. Harinarayana Madavu, addressed the gathering. Dr. Radhakrishna elaborated on how Prof. G.T. Narayana Rao became an inspiration to numerous amateur astrophysicists through his accessible and insightful works.
Also present on the dais were Dr. K. Chandrashekar, Head of the Department of Physics, and Mr. Vipin Naik N.S., Coordinator, PG Department of Physics. The programme was attended by Dr. Vijaykumar M, Vice Principal of the college, along with faculty members of the Science departments.
Following the formal inauguration, a lecture series was conducted by Prof. Harinarayana Madavu and Dr. A.P. Radhakrishna, who delivered detailed talks on the life, achievements, and scientific literature of Prof. G.T. Narayana Rao.
The programme commenced with a prayer rendered by Manasa and team, students of II B.Sc. Dr. K Chandrashekar delivered the welcome address. The event was compered by Mrs. Poojashree V. Rai, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Mr. Sujith S., Assistant Professor, PG Department of Physics.
The commemoration served as an inspiring tribute, offering students valuable insights into the legacy of Prof. G.T. Narayana Rao and reinforcing the importance of scientific inquiry and knowledge dissemination.
