St Philomena Autonomous College, Puttur, celebrated National Education Day in commemoration of the birth anniversary of first Education Minister of India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The event, organized by the Student Council, was held at the Postgraduate Seminar Hall of the college.
The program was graced by Dr Norbert Mascarenhas, Registrar (Academic), as the chief guest. In his keynote address, Dr Mascarenhas highlighted that National Education Day marks the enduring legacy of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’s eleven-year tenure as Education Minister. “The day reminds us that education must provide equal opportunities for all,” he stated, emphasizing Azad’s pivotal role in laying the foundations for modern education and describing education as a sacred service that sows the seeds of values, not just knowledge.
Presiding over the function, Vice Principal Dr Vijaykumar Moleyar called for meaningful observance of Education Day, urging that such celebrations should not remain mere formalities but serve as reminders to future generations of the nation-building contributions made by great personalities like Maulana Azad. He recalled that some 150 years ago, Azad’s vision led to the establishment of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Sahitya Akademi, and Lalit Kala Akademi, a testimony to his commitment to arts, literature, and culture. Dr Moleyar stressed that, following Azad’s beliefs, knowledge should be utilized wisely, and commemorative events help reinforce this vital message.
The event began with a welcome by Student Council President Muzammil A. and concluded with a vote of thanks from Secretary Yusuf Alfaz. Attendees included Student Welfare Officer Dr Radhakrishna Gowda, Spearl Fiona Rodrigues, Public Relations Officer Bharathi S. Rai, and several student council representatives and students.
