English Language Day ‘Literatura -2K26’

The Department of English at St Philomena Autonomous College celebrated International English Language Day on Thursday by hosting ‘Literatura- 2K26’, at the SJM Auditorium on campus.

Presiding over the event, Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro emphasized the enduring significance of the English language in contemporary life. In his address, he emphasized the need for quality, discipline, and seriousness in one’s personal and academic journey. He noted that the respect any language commands is ultimately determined by the value people attach to it. Encouraging students to communicate from within, he urged them to let their personalities reflect clarity and authenticity in expression.

The programme featured Mr Amit C. Shetty, Assistant General Manager and Deputy Regional Head at Bank of Baroda, Puttur Regional Office, as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he highlighted the importance of drawing inspiration from exemplary individuals in society- those who have created value in their lives and contributed positively to social change. He advised students to remain clear and focused about their goals.

As part of the celebrations, a series of competitions were organized to mark International English Language Day. The chief guest distributed prizes to the winners, recognizing their literary and communicative excellence.

Renowned Pro Kabaddi player and coach Prashanth Rai, who is also an employee of Bank of Baroda and an alumnus of the college was present in the programme. Head of the Department of English Dr Bharathi S. Rai, faculty members Mrs Noveline D’Souza, Mrs Sushma Crast and Mr Vinil Rohan D’Souza , and students were present on the occasion.

The event witnessed active student participation in organizing and conducting the programme. The invocation was led by second-year B.Sc. student Manasa and first-year B.Sc. student Aparna. The introductory address was delivered by second-year B. Com student Apoorva, while second-year BBA student Priya introduced the chief guest. The welcome address was given by second-year BCA student Sheetal Rai, and the vote of thanks was proposed by second-year BA student Aishwarya. The event was compered by second-year B.Sc. student Aishath Jabeena.

Faculty support for the programme was provided by Assistant Professors Ms. Noveline D’Souza, Ms. Sushma Crasta, and Mr. Vinil Rohan D’Souza.

The celebration stood as a testament to the college’s commitment to fostering linguistic appreciation and literary engagement among students, blending academic insight with cultural expression.
