St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, organised a student speech competition on Friday as part of the observance of National Librarians’ Day 2026, providing a platform for students to showcase their oratory skills while highlighting the continuing relevance of libraries in the digital era.

 The competition, jointly organised by the Library and Information Centre and the Fine Arts Association, was held at the PG Seminar Hall of the college. A total of 45 undergraduate students participated in the event, presenting diverse perspectives on the theme, ‘The Importance of Libraries in the Digital Age.’ The programme aimed to promote a culture of reading while strengthening students’ communication and public speaking skills.

 Inaugurating the event, Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro emphasized the close relationship between reading and effective communication. He observed that reading and the ability to articulate ideas complement one another and stressed the need for students to nurture their creative potential in an increasingly competitive world.

 “Reading and the art of communication go hand in hand. In today's world, it is vital for students to nurture their creative potential. Competitions such as these should not merely produce good speakers but should also serve as meaningful platforms for students to express their original thoughts and personal insights,” he said.

 The competition was adjudicated by retired Kannada lecturer Nemichandra Gowda M. and retired librarian Ramachandra, who evaluated the participants on the content, delivery, clarity of expression and overall presentation.

 In the competition, Vindhyashree Rai, a final-year B.Sc. student, won the first prize, while Shreevidya N., a second-year B.Sc. student, secured the second prize. The third prize was jointly awarded to Likhitha P., a final-year B.Com. student, and Bhavith A., a second-year B.Sc. (Data Science) student.

 Earlier, Prashanth Rai, Director of the Fine Arts Association, welcomed the gathering and coordinated the programme. Selection Grade Librarian Abdul Rahman G proposed the vote of thanks. The invocation was led by Sannidhi, a first-year B.B.A. student, and Manasa, a final-year B.Sc. student. Extended Library Librarian Manohar S. G. was present on the dais.
