National Library Week: Book Exhibition and Sale

St Philomena Autonomous College, Puttur, inaugurated a five-day Book Exhibition and Sale on November 3 at the Silver Jubilee Memorial Hall. This is an event organized jointly by the Library and Information Centre of the college and Navakarnataka Publications, Mangalore, in observance of National Library Week 2025. The exhibition will continue until November 7, providing students and faculty an opportunity to browse and purchase a wide array of books at discounted rates.

The program was officially opened by Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro. Speaking at the inauguration, he emphasized the timeless significance of books, describing them as “lifelong companions that foster both knowledge and creativity.” Highlighting the importance of cultivating reading and writing habits, he announced November as Library Month at the college and urged students to make the most of book exhibitions which remind us of the ongoing relevance of printed knowledge in the fast-paced digital era.

Chief guest Mr Harish Kumar of  Nava Karnataka Publications (Mangalore), presented the publisher’s vision, stating, “Books are a medium through which we serve humanity. Publishing thought-provoking works is our primary aim, and we intend to make quality literature easily accessible to students and scholars. Exhibitions like this act as bridges between authors and readers, nurturing intellectual curiosity.”

The event saw the participation of several distinguished guests including retired Kannada Department head Prof. Harinarayana Madavu, retired vice principal Prof. Vishnu Bhatt,  Vice Prncipal Dr Vijayakumar Moleyar ,faculty members, Library Advisory Committee members, student council representatives, and a large number of students.

The proceedings were conducted by faculty member Prashanth Rai. Selection Grade Librarian of the College Abdul Rahman G. delivered the welcome address, and postgraduate section librarian Manohar S G proposed the vote of thanks.

The exhibition features books spanning literature, science, commerce, management, technology, and general knowledge, all available at attractive discounts. The initiative aims to rekindle students’ interest in reading, promote the joys and benefits of literary exploration, and reinforce the value of libraries in academic and personal growth.
