St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

St Philomena’s (Autonomous) College, Puttur, in collaboration with the Department of Kannada and Kannada Sangha, organized a special lecture titled “Niranjan-100 Remembrance” on November 19 at Spandana Hall. Addressing the audience, retired principal Varadaraj Chandragiri offered a vivid portrait of revolutionary writer Kulakunda Shivaraya (Niranjan), highlighting his challenging childhood, unyielding spirit in overcoming adversity, and the inspiration behind his renowned novel Chirasmarane. The lecture traced Niranjan’s deep association with the college and his enduring impact on progressive Kannada literature, despite personal hardships and physical challenges.
The event was presided over by Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, who remarked on the vital role of literature in nurturing emotional well-being and encouraging youth to engage with books and creative writing. Vice Principal and Kannada Department Head Dr Vijaykumar Moleyar, Controller of Examinations Dr Vinaychandra, Student Welfare Officer Dr Radhakrishna Gowda, Economics Department Head Vasudev N., and Kannada faculty Prashanthi and Pratibha Shetty were present on the occasion. The programme included student-led prayers, welcomes, vote of thanks, and compering by B.Sc. students Manasa, Aparna, Shrilakshmi, Shibla, and Vindhyashree Rai, ensuring a well-coordinated and meaningful tribute to Niranjan’s literary legacy.
