St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

National Service Scheme (NSS) activities play a significant role in nurturing a spirit of service, discipline and social responsibility among students and contribute substantially to their holistic personality development, said Dr Hariprasad S., Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, Government First Grade College, Uppinangady. Dr Hariprasad was speaking after inaugurating the NSS unit at St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, as the chief guest. Addressing the students on the occasion, he emphasised the importance of social service and urged them to develop a strong sense of responsibility towards society
Presiding over the programme, College Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro called upon students to cultivate socially responsible and community-oriented thinking from their student days. He emphasised the importance of developing values that would enable students to contribute meaningfully to society.NSS Officers Prof. Dr K. Chandrashekar delivered the introductory remarks, Pushpa N. welcomed the gathering, while Unit Leader Sai Pratheesh introduced the chief guest and other dignitaries to the audience. Unit Leader Brindan and NSS Secretary Karthik were present on the occasion. Unit Leader Spandana compered the programme, while Shilpa proposed the vote of thanks. The formal programme was followed by a variety of cultural performances presented by the students, bringing the event to a successful conclusion.
