St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

The Department of Mathematics at St Philomena College (Autonomous) organized an engaging and intellectually enriching workshop titled “Origami: The Mathematics behind the Art”, offering students a unique opportunity to explore the practical applications of mathematical concepts through hands-on learning.
The programme was presided over by the Principal, Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Montiero, who lauded the Department for conceptualizing and organizing a meaningful and creative academic initiative. He appreciated the effort to bridge theoretical mathematical concepts with experiential learning, thereby making the subject more accessible and inspiring for students.
The highlight of the event was the session led by resource person Dr Adelaide Saldanha, who eloquently unfolded the mathematical foundations embedded in the traditional art of paper folding. Through live demonstrations and interactive explanations, she illuminated concepts such as symmetry, geometry, angles, and geometric transformations. Dr Saldanha emphasized the elegance and inherent beauty of Mathematics concealed within simple origami techniques, captivating the audience with her insightful presentation.
Mrs Thanuja N. P., Head of the Department of Mathematics, was present on the dais. The programme also witnessed the presence of Dr Malini K., Dean of Science; Dr Edwin D’Souza, Finance Officer; Dr K. Chandrashekhar, Head of the Department of Physics; Mrs. Poojashree V. Rai, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics; Ms Rakshitha K. Shetty, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics; and Ms Pratheeksha, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics. Students of the B.Sc. programme participated enthusiastically in the workshop.
The event commenced with a prayer rendered by Manasa and her team from II B.Sc. Ayishath Jabina of II B.Sc. extended a warm welcome to the gathering, while Sushma Wagle of II B.Sc. delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Shrividya of I B.Sc.
The workshop successfully demonstrated how creative methodologies like origami can transform abstract mathematical principles into tangible and enjoyable learning experiences, leaving students with a renewed appreciation for the subject.
