St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

The PG Department of Mathematics at St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, marked Pi Day with an engaging and intellectually enriching programme that underscored the significance of the mathematical constant π (pi). The celebration featured a guest lecture on the theme “Mathematics in Music,” drawing attention to the interdisciplinary nature of mathematical concepts.
The event was presided over by Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of the institution, who highlighted the importance of nurturing talents alongside academic pursuits. In his address, he invoked the example of Albert Einstein, encouraging students to broaden their intellectual horizons by exploring connections between mathematics, philosophy, and creativity.
The keynote session was delivered by Dr Prakash Prabhu, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics from SDM College, Ujire. In his lecture, Dr. Prabhu elaborated on the importance of π and its distinctive properties as an irrational number. He captivated the audience with interactive mathematical games and demonstrations that illustrated the deep relationship between mathematics and music. Through carefully chosen musical pieces, he helped students grasp concepts associated with classical music, making the session both educational and enjoyable.
The programme commenced with an invocation by Yashaswi K Rao and team. The event was compered by Ms. Shreedevi N, a first-year M.Sc. Mathematics student compered. The welcome address was delivered by Ms Pratheeksha, Assistant Professor of the PG Department of Mathematics.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms Shreeraksha K, a first-year M.Sc. Mathematics student, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, resource person, faculty members, and students for their active participation and support.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from M.Sc. Mathematics students and faculty members of the PG Department of Mathematics. Overall, the Pi Day celebration proved to be both informative and engaging, leaving participants with a deeper appreciation of the relevance and beauty of mathematics in diverse fields.
