St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

St Philomena (Autonomous) College, Puttur, celebrated a proud moment as its distinguished alumnus Prof. Prashanth Menezes, currently Head of the Department of Materials Chemistry for Catalysis at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB), was awarded the coveted VAIBHAV Fellowship by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, for the year 2025.
Prof. Menezes, a globally recognized scientist renowned for his work in accelerator science and materials chemistry, visited his alma mater and engaged an insightful interactive session with faculty and students from the science departments. The occasion was marked as truly memorable for all participants.
Known for his pioneering research in environmental sustainability and renewable energy, Prof. Menezes’ latest achievement adds another feather to his illustrious cap. He has published over 200 high-impact research papers and received numerous national and international awards, cementing his place among the world's leading scientific minds. His success also brings great honour and recognition to St Philomena College, putting its academic legacy on a global map.
During the visit, Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro warmly welcomed Prof. Menezes. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Menezes fondly reminisced about his formative years at the institution, crediting the nurturing environment of the college and encouragement from faculty for laying the foundation for his scientific journey. “I am indebted to my college for the solid education and supportive scientific culture which shaped my achievements,” he remarked.
In his dialogue with students, Prof. Menezes highlighted the growing importance of scientific research and innovation in today’s world and urged young scholars to pursue excellence and originality. He also praised the recent progress and accomplishments of St Philomena College.
