Marking the commencement of the new academic year, St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, organised a Student Welcome and Induction Programme for newly admitted undergraduate students at the SJM Hall on the college campus.

The programme was inaugurated with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the Correspondent of the College, Rev. Fr Dr J. B. Saldanha, who presided over the function.

Addressing the students, Rev. Fr Dr Saldanha urged them to develop the knowledge, skills and values necessary to succeed in an increasingly competitive world. He encouraged students to seek opportunities within the country, cultivate intellectual competence and shoulder responsibilities with commitment. Stressing the importance of self-awareness and goal-setting, he advised them to choose their own direction in life and pursue their aspirations with determination. He observed that education is essentially a process of expanding knowledge and emphasised the need to imbibe the cultural values and ethical traditions nurtured by one’s family. He also acknowledged the sacrifices and integrity of parents in shaping the future of their children.

College Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro said that the institution functions with complete impartiality and does not discriminate among students on any grounds. The college, he noted, recognises every individual primarily as a student and strives to mould them into responsible citizens and compassionate human beings. Extending a warm welcome to the freshers, he said the institution possesses a distinct academic culture and a rich legacy. He expressed the hope that students would experience holistic development by making the best use of the learning opportunities and actively participating in the academic and co-curricular activities offered by the institution. Such involvement, he added, would significantly enhance the value of their higher education.

 Vice-Principal Dr Vijay Kumar Moleyar presented an overview of the academic system, institutional regulations and the functioning of the college under autonomous status. Officials from Fr Patrao Hospital delivered an awareness session on the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, highlighting the importance of a drug-free lifestyle, while representatives of the Police Department sensitised students to various aspects of cybercrime and online safety.

 The programme commenced with an invocation by Ms Sriraga, Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce (M.Com.). Dr Edwin D'Souza, coordinator of the Student Induction Programme (SIP), welcomed the gathering and also proposed the vote of thanks. The proceedings were compered by Dr Dimple Fernandes,Head of the Department of Hindi.
