St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

In a significant move toward bridging the gap between academia and industry, the Department of Computer Science at St Philomena College, Puttur, in collaboration with IBM and the ICT Academy, successfully concluded a five-day intensive certificate course on “Data Analytics using Python.” The valedictory ceremony, held at the college’s Computer Science Laboratory, marked the completion of a program designed to equip students with future-ready technical skills.
Presiding over the function, Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of St Philomena College, emphasized the transformative power of data in the digital era. Addressing the students, he noted that in today’s knowledge-based society, data is far more than a mere collection of numbers and words instead it is the very bedrock of informed decision-making.
“The ability to analyze and visually present data in a meaningful way is an essential skill in the modern workforce,” Dr Monteiro stated. “This course reflects our institutional vision to look beyond the standard curriculum. It is a vital first step in making our students industry-ready and future-proof.”
He further urged students not to view the certificate as an end point but as the beginning of a journey. “I hope our students grow into professionals who can question data, analyze it, and provide meaningful solutions to societal challenges,” he added.
The lead trainer for the IBM-sponsored course, Mr. Syed Khaiser, attended as the chief guest. He lauded the institution for providing students with exposure to emerging technologies outside their prescribed syllabus.
“Students must capitalize on these opportunities. Supplementing a degree with specialized certifications significantly enhances employability,” Mr. Khaiser remarked. He congratulated the participants for choosing Data Analytics, stressing that "continuous learning is the only path to professional excellence."
The program commenced with a welcome address and introductory remarks by Dr Vinayachandra, Dean of the Computer Science Department and Registrar (Evaluation).
Providing a glimpse into the student experience, Darshan and Srujana, final-year BCA students, shared their feedback, highlighting how the hands-on training provided them with practical insights into Python-based analytics.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr Abhishek Suvarna, Institutional Coordinator of ICT Academy and Assistant Registrar (Evaluation). The event was anchored by Ms Suraksha S, Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Course Coordinator.
