St Philomena College(Autonomous) was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

Dr PS Krishna Kumar, Head of the Chemistry Department and Vice Principal of St Philomena College, Puttur, to retire on May 31 after an illustrious career spanning 38 years.
Dr Krishna Kumar’s educational journey began at Government Higher Primary School, Parladka, followed by secondary education at St Philomena High School, Puttur. He pursued his pre-university education at Government P U College, Puttur, and completed his graduation from Vivekananda College. He holds a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Mangalore University.
In 1986, Dr Krishna Kumar joined St Philomena College as a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry. From 2001 to 2004, he was transferred to Milagris College, Kalyanpur, and later returned to St Philomena College, where he served from 2004 to 2024. Throughout his tenure, he held various positions, including Director of the Science Forum, Editor of the college annual magazine ‘Philoprabha’, and Vice Principal of the college. He has made significant contributions to academia, serving multiple times as a member of the Chemistry Board of Studies and the Chemistry Examination Board at Mangalore University. He also once chaired the Examination Board. His research has been widely recognized, with numerous articles published in national and international journals. He served as the subject expert on the interview panel for the selection of degree college teachers and also as a subject expert for the formation of the chemistry textbook for Kerala State (Kannada language).
Dr Krishna Kumar is the son of Mr Sitarama Padi and Mrs Venkateswari Padi of Puttur. He resides in Maril, Puttur, with his wife, Mrs Jayashree, and their two children: daughter Madhura Bhat, who is pursuing research in Bangalore, and son Rama Tejaswi, a third-year architecture student.
