St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

In a commendable initiative to strengthen conceptual learning, the Department of Mathematics, in association with the Innovation Hub, Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and New Age Incubation Network, organized a hands-on workshop titled “Visualization of Mathematical Concepts through GeoGebra” recently. The event was designed to provide participants with practical exposure to dynamic and interactive methods of understanding mathematical principles.
The workshop was presided over by Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Montiero, who addressed the gathering with reflections drawn from his doctoral research. Although his research lay in the domain of Physics, he emphasized that a substantial portion relied heavily on mathematical applications. Stressing the indispensable role of mathematics in higher education and research, he encouraged students to build a strong foundation in the subject and cultivate essential analytical skills.
The session was conducted by distinguished resource persons Dr Ramananda H. S., Professor at St. Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, and Mrs Shivani S., Assistant Professor at the same institution. They introduced participants to the fundamentals of GeoGebra, highlighting its effectiveness as a tool for visualizing mathematical concepts in an engaging and dynamic manner. Through guided, hands-on activities, students explored various features of the software, enabling them to grasp abstract mathematical ideas through graphical representation.
Dr Ramananda H. S. remarked that the institution holds a special place for him, appreciating the enthusiasm and active participation displayed by the students throughout the session. Mrs Shivani S. complemented the learning experience by facilitating interactive demonstrations, ensuring that the participants could effectively apply the concepts in real time.
Ms Pratheeksha, Ms Deepika, and Ms. Anju James, Assistant Professors from the Department of PG Mathematics, Students from both BSc and MSc programmes participated in large numbers, contributing to the vibrant academic atmosphere.
