St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

The Department of Mathematics at St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, organized a workshop titled “LaTeX: From Zero to Professional Document” on Saturday with the objective of introducing students to the fundamentals and practical applications of LaTeX in preparing professional academic documents.
The programme was presided over by the Principal, Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Montiero, who emphasized the importance of LaTeX in academic work. In his address, he explained that LaTeX is a powerful tool used across many disciplines, particularly for preparing documents in a systematic and professional format. He also appreciated the initiative taken by the Department of Mathematics in organizing such a workshop for students, noting that it would greatly benefit them in their academic and research pursuits.
On the occasion, prizes were also distributed to the winners of a competition conducted during the previous workshop on Origami. The winners were congratulated and appreciated for their creativity and enthusiastic participation.
The technical session was conducted by the resource person Dr Mahesh K. B., Principal of Government First Grade College, Vamadapadavu. In his introductory remarks, he explained the significance of LaTeX in creating well-structured documents, especially in academic and research contexts. He guided students through the process of installing the LaTeX application and demonstrated how it can be used to write mathematical equations in a clear and professional format. He also showcased how graphs and other elements can be created and inserted into documents using LaTeX, providing students with practical insights into its wide-ranging capabilities.
Among those present on the dais were Mrs Thanuja N. P., Head of the Department of Mathematics, along with Dr Malini K., Dean of Science, Dr Edwin S. D’Souza, Finance Officer, and Ms Rakshitha K. Shetty, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics. Students of the B.Sc. programme also attended the workshop.
The programme began with a prayer rendered by Manasa and team from II B.Sc. Gayathri of III B.Sc. welcomed the gathering, while Thanushree of III B.Sc. proposed the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Harshitha Fressia Lobo of III B.Sc.
The workshop provided students with valuable exposure to LaTeX and highlighted its importance as an essential tool for preparing professional academic documents.
