St Philomena College was founded by Msgr Antony Patrao who felt that a College in this part of the state would save the people of the inconvenience of moving to distant places for higher education. He set out to realize his dream and the mission was accomplished in the year 1958.
Since its inception, the Institute has lived up to societal expectations, turning out consistent and appreciable results in academic and non-academic fields. The institution does attempt to treat the primary stakeholders in 5 UG programs and 5 PG programs with a rewarding educational experience.

The cultural stage of Papemajalu High School came alive with colour, rhythm and classical splendour as the Yakshagana Yaksharoopaka “Sudarshana” was staged during the Annual Camp of the National Service Scheme (NSS) of St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur.
Organised under the aegis of the NSS unit, the performance was presented by the Yakshakala Kendra (Centre for the Study of Indian Classical and Folk Arts) as part of its cultural outreach initiative. The production formed a significant highlight of the camp’s cultural engagements, drawing an appreciative audience from Ariyadka village and the surrounding areas.
The Yaksharoopaka, based on the ‘Sudarshanopakhyana’ episode, showcased the dramatic and devotional dimensions of the character ‘Sudarshana.’ Student artist Mithun delivered a mature and compelling portrayal of the titular role, earning admiration for his expressive abhinaya and commanding stage presence. His nuanced performance vividly brought the character to life, reflecting rigorous training and artistic discipline.
The musical ensemble lent powerful support to the production. Yakshakala Director Prashanth Rai led the vocal rendition with evocative depth, while Balasubrahmanya on the maddale (mridanga) provided rhythmic solidity. Ayush on the chende infused energy and dynamism into the performance, and Mihir Bhat enriched the presentation with melodic accompaniment on the violin. Together, the team created an immersive aesthetic experience rooted in the rich traditions of Yakshagana.
The successful execution of the programme was made possible through the encouragement and guidance of Principal Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro. The initiative also received valuable support from NSS Programme Officers Dr Chandrashekar K and Pushpa N, whose coordinated efforts ensured the smooth conduct of the event.
Senior cultural patron Ammanna Rai Derla honoured the student artistes in recognition of their dedication and artistic excellence. Co-Camp Officer Harshith R delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the performers, organisers and the local community for their wholehearted participation.
